Retainer Care Guide

Your roadmap to protecting your beautiful new smile for life

Your Braces Are Off—Now the Real Work Begins!

Congratulations on completing your orthodontic treatment! Your teeth look amazing. But here's the truth: teeth have memory. Without proper retention, they'll gradually shift back toward their original positions.

Your retainer is the key to keeping your smile beautiful for life. Think of it as insurance for your investment—wear it faithfully, care for it properly, and your smile will stay perfect for decades!

Critical: Teeth Can Shift at ANY Age

This isn't just for the first few months—teeth can shift throughout your entire life. We've seen patients whose teeth moved significantly after just a few weeks without their retainer.

The Rule of Thumb: Wear your retainer as long as you want your teeth to stay straight. For most people, that means lifelong retention!

How to Clean Your Hawley Retainers

Follow these steps to keep your retainer fresh, clean, and bacteria-free

1

Rinse Immediately

After removing your retainer, immediately rinse it under cool or lukewarm water to remove saliva and loose debris.

r

Never use hot water—it can warp the plastic!

2

Brush Gently

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with mild dish soap or non-abrasive toothpaste. Gently scrub all surfaces, including the wire.

r

Avoid whitening toothpaste—it can be too abrasive.

3

Deep Clean Weekly

Once a week, soak in retainer cleaning solution or a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar for 15-20 minutes.

r

Don't use mouthwash—it can damage the plastic.

4

Rinse & Dry

Thoroughly rinse your retainer and pat dry with a clean towel. Store in your retainer case when not wearing.

r

Never leave it exposed to air—bacteria can grow.

How to Clean Your Clear Retainers

Follow these steps to keep your retainer fresh, clean, and bacteria-free

1

Rinse Immediately

Every time you remove your retainer, rinse it under cool water to prevent buildup and keep it fresh.

r

Hot water will warp and ruin clear retainers!

2

Brush Daily

Use a soft toothbrush with clear antibacterial soap (not toothpaste). Brush gently to avoid scratching the plastic.

r

Toothpaste is too abrasive and will cloud the plastic.

3

Soak Regularly

Soak in retainer cleaning tablets or solution 2-3 times per week to eliminate bacteria and keep retainers crystal clear.

r

Avoid colored mouthwash—it can stain retainers.

4

Air Dry in Case

After cleaning, let your retainer air dry briefly, then store it in its case. Never wrap in tissue or napkins!

r

Wrapped retainers often get thrown away accidentally.

How to Clean Your Permanent Retainers

Follow these steps to keep your retainer fresh, clean, and bacteria-free

1

Floss Daily with Threader

Use a floss threader to clean under the wire and between each tooth. This is critical for preventing buildup.

r

Skipping flossing can lead to tartar buildup and gum disease.

2

Water Flosser

A water flosser is highly effective for cleaning around the bonded wire. Use it daily for best results.

r

Don't skip this—it reaches areas brushing can't.

3

Brush Carefully

Brush the wire and behind your teeth carefully with a soft brush. Pay special attention to the areas where the wire is bonded.

r

Be gentle to avoid loosening the bonds.

4

Regular Check-ups

Visit Dr. Feller every 6 months to ensure the wire is secure and your teeth haven't shifted.

r

A loose wire needs immediate attention.

Your Retainer Wear Schedule

Retention is a lifelong commitment—here's your typical timeline

CRITICAL

First 3-6 Months

24/7 Wear

Wear your retainer all day and night, only removing for eating, brushing, and sports.

CRITICAL

6-12 Months

Nights Only

After the initial period, you'll likely transition to wearing your retainer only while sleeping.

Long-Term

Several Nights Per Week

Many patients wear retainers 3-5 nights per week for life to maintain results. Your orthodontist will customize your schedule.

Common Retainer Problems & Solutions

Quick troubleshooting guide for retainer issues

Retainer Feels Tight

Call Immediately

Cause:

You haven't been wearing it consistently. Teeth have started to shift.

Solution:

Wear it full-time for a few days. If it still doesn't fit, call our office immediately. Don't force it!

Retainer Is Lost or Broken

Call Immediately

Cause:

Accidents happen! Left in napkin, stepped on, pet got it, or simply misplaced.

Solution:

Call us ASAP to order a replacement. Teeth can shift quickly without retention—time matters!

Cloudy or Discolored

Cause:

Mineral buildup from saliva, or staining from food/drinks.

Solution:

Deep clean with retainer cleaner or vinegar solution. For persistent cloudiness, we can make a new retainer.

Bad Odor

Cause:

Bacteria buildup from inadequate cleaning.

Solution:

Soak in retainer cleaning solution overnight. Improve daily cleaning routine and never go to bed without brushing first.

How Long Do Retainers Last?

Expected lifespan varies by retainer type

Clear Retainers

1-3 years

Clear plastic retainers wear down over time from normal use and cleaning. Most patients need replacements every 1-3 years.

Hawley Retainers

5-10 years

Traditional retainers are very durable and can last many years with proper care. The wire may need occasional adjustment.

Permanent Retainers

10-20+ years

Fixed retainers can last decades if properly maintained. However, the bond can break and may need repair occasionally.

Plan for Replacements

Even with perfect care, retainers wear out. Clear retainers especially need periodic replacement. Budget for new retainers every few years as part of maintaining your smile.

Pro Tip: Many patients keep a backup retainer! If you lose or break your primary retainer, a backup ensures your teeth won't shift while waiting for a replacement.

Protect Your Investment—Wear Your Retainer!

You've invested time, effort, and resources into achieving a beautiful smile. Your retainer is the key to keeping it that way. Make retention a lifelong habit, and your smile will thank you for decades to come!
