MARPE

Mini-implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion for Teens & Adults

Revolutionary Jaw Expansion Without Surgery

For decades, adults needing jaw expansion were told they'd need surgery. MARPE (Micro-implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) has changed everything. This innovative technique uses mini-implants to widen the upper jaw—non-surgically—creating space, correcting crossbites, and improving airway even after the jaw has stopped growing.

Why It's a Game-Changer: MARPE makes true skeletal expansion possible for older teens and adults—avoiding surgery, saving time and cost, and delivering stable, long-term results. It's one of the most exciting advances in modern orthodontics!

What It Is

MARPE (Micro-implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expander) is an advanced expansion technique that uses mini-implants to widen the upper jaw in teens and adults—something once thought impossible without surgery.

How It Works

Four tiny implants placed in the palate provide stable anchorage to split the midpalatal suture and widen the jaw, creating space and improving airway—even after the suture has fused.

Why It's Revolutionary

MARPE makes jaw expansion possible for adults who would otherwise need jaw surgery, offering a non-surgical solution for crowding, crossbites, and airway restrictions.

Who Benefits from MARPE?

Common scenarios where MARPE is the ideal solution

Teens & Adults with Narrow Jaws

If your palate is narrow and your midpalatal suture has fused (typically after age 16), traditional expanders won't work—but MARPE can!

Large Gaps from Extractions

When closing extraction spaces, TADs prevent back teeth from moving forward—keeping them anchored while front teeth slide back.

Avoiding Headgear

TADs eliminate the need for traditional headgear—no bulky appliances or compliance issues!

MARPE vs. Other Expansion Methods

Understanding your options for palatal expansion

Traditional Expander

Children & young teens (before suture fusion)

Pushes on teeth to widen the jaw and split the midpalatal suture

Pros:

No surgical placement
Proven technique

Cons:

Speech may sound different initially
Requires extra care when cleaning
Rare chance of loosening

MARPE

Placement of Mini-Implants

1 visit (60-90 min)

Under local anesthetic, we place four small mini-implants into your palate. This is similar to getting a filling—minimal discomfort!

What Happens:

Local anesthetic numbs the area
Four mini-implants placed in palate
MARPE appliance bonded to teeth
Instructions provided

Expansion Phase

3-6 weeks

You (or a helper) turn the expansion screw daily using a special key. You'll feel pressure as the suture gradually splits and the jaw widens.

What Happens:

Turn screw 1-2x daily as directed
Feel pressure (normal!)
Gap appears between front teeth (good sign!)
Weekly check-ins with our team

Stabilization Phase

6-9 months

Expansion stops, but the appliance stays in place while new bone fills the gap. This is critical for long-term stability!

What Happens:

No more turning
MARPE remains in place
Bone fills the expansion gap
Gap between front teeth begins closing

Removal & Continued Orthodontics

Ongoing

Once the bone has solidified, we remove the MARPE. If you're in braces or aligners, we continue aligning your teeth into the new, wider jaw.

What Happens:

MARPE removed (quick & easy)
Mini-implants removed
Orthodontic treatment continues
Final alignment and detailing

What to Expect: Timeline

Your experience from placement through stabilization

Does Placement Hurt?

Pressure, numbness, awareness of appliance

What's Normal:

Feeling of pressure where implants placed
Numbness fading over 2-3 hours
Sensation of fullness in mouth
Slight soreness

Tips:

Take OTC pain reliever as directed
Eat soft foods
Rinse with salt water

First Week

Adjusting, mild soreness, speech changes

What's Normal:

Speaking a bit differently
Extra saliva
Tenderness around implants
Getting used to turning the screw

Tips:

Practice speaking out loud
Continue soft diet
Salt water rinses 3x daily
Follow turning instructions carefully

During Expansion (Weeks 2-6)

Pressure after each turn, growing gap between front teeth

What's Normal:

Gap between front teeth widening (this is GOOD!)
Pressure lasting 10-15 min after turn
Occasional tingling at bridge of nose
Feeling of expansion

Tips:

The gap is a sign of success!
Continue turns as prescribed
Stay consistent with timing
Report any concerns immediately

Stabilization Phase (Months 6-9)

No more turning, adapting to appliance

What's Normal:

No more pressure from turns
Appliance feels norma
Gap starts to close
Bone filling in

Tips:

Keep appliance clean
Be patient—bone needs time
Avoid hard/sticky foods
Maintain excellent oral hygiene

Tips for Successful Expansion

Make your MARPE experience smooth and effective

Follow the Turning Schedule

Turn the screw exactly as prescribed—usually 1-2 times per day. Consistency is key to achieving the right amount of expansion.

Turn Toward the Back of the Throat

Always rotate the key toward the back of your throat until the next hole appears. Never turn backward!

Use Good Lighting

Use a flashlight or phone light to clearly see the screw hole. Good visibility prevents mistakes.

The Gap is a Good Sign!

As a gap appears between your front teeth, it means the expansion is working! This gap will close naturally with braces.

Manage Pressure with OTC Pain Relief

Feeling pressure for 10-15 minutes after each turn is normal. OTC pain reliever can help if needed.

Keep It Clean

Brush around the MARPE after every meal. Use a water flosser to flush debris from under the appliance.

The MARPE Advantage

Why MARPE is transforming orthodontic treatment

Non-Surgical Jaw Expansion

Achieve results that would otherwise require surgery—without the scalpel, anesthesia, or recovery time.

Improved Airway & Breathing

Widening the upper jaw increases nasal airway volume, potentially reducing or eliminating sleep apnea and snoring.

True Skeletal Expansion

Force is applied to bone (not teeth), resulting in true skeletal widening—stable and predictable.

Avoid Tooth Extractions

Creating space naturally means fewer cases requiring permanent tooth removal to fit crowded smiles.

Correct Crossbites

MARPE effectively corrects posterior crossbites, improving bite function and facial symmetry.

Enhanced Facial Aesthetics

Expansion can improve facial width and proportions, creating a more balanced, attractive appearance.

Common Questions & Concerns

Honest answers about MARPE treatment

Does Placement Hurt?

The area is numbed with local anesthetic, so you won't feel pain during placement—just pressure. Most patients report mild soreness for 1-2 days afterward, easily managed with OTC pain relief.

Truth:Most patients say it's easier than expected!

Will the Gap Between My Front Teeth Stay?

No! The gap is a sign of successful expansion. Once expansion is complete and the appliance is removed, braces or aligners will close the gap naturally.

Truth:The gap is temporary and part of the process.

What If the Suture Doesn't Split?

MARPE has a high success rate (80-90%) in splitting the suture. If it doesn't split, we may try a longer expansion period or, rarely, refer for surgical assistance (SARPE).

Truth:Most patients expand successfully with MARPE.

Can I Eat Normally?

Initially, stick to soft foods for a few days. After that, resume your normal diet but avoid extremely hard, sticky, or chewy foods that could damage the appliance.

Truth:Most patients say it's easier than expected!

Will People Notice It?

The MARPE appliance is on the roof of your mouth, so it's not visible when you smile or talk. Most people won't notice it at all!

Truth:It's discreet and hidden from view.

How Do I Know If I'm a Candidate?

We'll use 3D imaging to assess your palatal suture and bone structure. If you're over 16 and need expansion, MARPE is often the best option!

Truth:A consultation and scan will tell us for sure.
